Adding more vibrant and uplifting foods that are just starting to burst through the Earth is what spring is all about. These foods will help renew our bodies after a long winter. Start observing the foods that are growing in your area right now. Foods like fresh garlic, asparagus, peas, salad greens, citrus, cherries, dandelion, common mallow, etc. All of the spring foods do wonders for the lymphatic and digestive system which helps relieve winter stagnation and cleanse the liver. Spring herbs that are astringent and bitter help support proper digestion of fats and protein, dry excess fluids, and helps the lymphatic system remove waste.
Eliminating Processed Foods For Digestive Health
After going through some digestive issues the past couple of weeks. I reached a point where I was tired of the constant upset in my stomach. So I decided it was time to make a few changes and get rid of a few of my bad food habits. One of the biggest culprits I can already guess is my cosistant indulgence in processed foods.
During spring and summer our bodies are calling for lighter and uplifting foods and teas. That is why I thought it would be a good time to make some energy balls using light and uplifting ingredients like lime, moringa, and matcha. Dates are used to sweeten and mineral rich macadamia nuts and sweet toasted coconut flakes are used as the base.
Health Benefits of Matcha
The matcha I used is from Living Tea and is called Parasol. I received it in my spring tea club box at the beginning of the season. It is from Uji, Japan, and is of the highest quality matcha teas. It was thoughtfully grown and processed for traditional matcha tea drinking. This particular matcha is one of a kind. It is finely stone ground with a velvety ample body and subtle bittersweetness. The leaves are of the highest quality and shade-grown which yields a higher content of theanine (an amino acid that helps put you in a calm and meditative state) and caffeine. Thus creating energy that is more calming and gentle on the nervous system.
Health Benefits of Moringa
Moringa is a tree native to North-Western India and is now found all over the world in subtropical and tropical regions. It is commonly referred to as the “miracle tree” because of its healing abilities. The leaf contains vitamin C, B-carotene, potassium, protein, amino acids, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Each part of the plant has other beneficial nutritive and medicinal properties. The leaves don’t lose nutritional value when stored and the iron becomes more bioavailable when boiled.
Spring Matcha Moringa Energy Balls
- Blend 1 cup of macadamia nuts, 1/2 cup of dates, and 1/4 of toasted coconut in a food processor.
- Add a Tablespoon of matcha, moringa and 2 limes juiced.
- Roll into balls and enjoy
